Did you know beryllium is commonly used inside medical imaging equipment?

Beryllium is used in loads of medical equipment most of us have or will use at some point during our lives, such as X ray systems, CT equipment and a range of other scientific imaging tools.

Why do these machines contain beryllium? Because beryllium is:

• extremely light
• mechanically rigid
• thermally stable
• highly transparent to X rays

Beryllium is a very useful material, essential to high-tech manufacturing. These properties allow imaging systems to operate with high precision, improved thermal performance and minimal interference with X ray transmission.

However, it also creates an important downstream challenge.

As imaging systems age, are upgraded or decommissioned, organizations need to safely manage equipment containing beryllium alongside other hazardous or regulated materials.

That means everyone involved needs practical plans in place for:

1. Maintenance activities involving X ray windows, beamline components, shielding assemblies, connectors, electronic housings or internal imaging hardware that may contain beryllium alloys or ceramics

5. Contamination control workflows used to assess whether beryllium containing dust or debris has migrated onto surrounding tools, work surfaces, PPE or shared maintenance environments


In lots of cases, the challenge is not simply identifying where beryllium exists. It is understanding where contamination may have migrated during servicing, machining, breakage or disposal activities. Rapid field detection helps track migration and reduces delays to close out projects.
